Deyrolle's rock and mineral collection was created to provide the French Ministry of Education with the pedagogical tools for secondary schools. Boxes of rocks and minerals labelled the old fashion way, containing pieces of schist, calcareous stones, European granite, quartz, gypsum, pyrite, are still available at our store. Larger pieces such as amethyst druses, plaques of lapis lazuli, opals, pieces of amazonite, calcites, fulgurites and other minerals fill drawers and glass cabinets.

Very popular among collectors, casts of fossils used in the past in schools are for sale.

BOTANY

An increasing number of Nature lovers start their own herbarium. It requires both an interest for botany and a real artistic touch.

This outdoor activity is really enjoyable to do with kids. It opens them up to the plant world and teaches them to be respectful towards it.

Traditionally, Deyrolle always offered the required equipment for the creation of a herbarium such as a collecting box, sheets, labels, presses, and binders. With its unique style, the kits are put together by talented craftsmen. A selection of essential books used for plant identification is also available at the store.

SHELLS, CORALS, CRUSTACEAN

SHELLS

If the Washington Convention regulates the trade of the protected species of shells, there is still a wide variety of shells available in the oceans and can be found in Deyrolle's collections. Whether strange, nacred, colourful, impressive, delicate or architectural they come from every ocean and represent many shell families such as gastropod, bivalve, cephalopod, nautilus, star fish, cowrie and much more. They are all much appreciated for their ornamental values. Precious and delicate, our shells are mostly sold in the store and only a limited selection of small specimen is available on the website.

CORALS

Blue, white, orange or red, corals from all over different place in the world are regularly some time put for sale in the store, with their CITES, when needed. Widely diverse in shape, their ornamental aspect and beauty are astonishing and help to understand how important is to protect the sea bed .

CRUSTACEAN

With our regular shipments, Natural wonders collectors will also find the most extraordinary crustaceans. Presented in boxes, sold individually or mounted on stands like our unique segmented crustaceans, they will appeal to the amateurs of oceanic curiosities.

Respectful of the tradition of the place, curious people and Natural artefact collectors can find all kinds of treasures. One still can find at Deyrolle astonishing mineral collections, ostrich eggs mounted on stands, painting and other valuable items, butterfly wing collages, atypical mounted birds, segmented insects mounted under glass globes as they were done in the 19th century at Deyrolle, osteological pieces, faunal antiquities and much more.

One could come across unique pieces such as sea stars and spiders' neural systems, largely distributed in the past by Deyrolle that are now considered as museum pieces.

ENTOMOLOGY

Passionate by Natural Sciences, Jean Baptiste Deyolle developed insects and rare butterflies' collections. During decades they attracted many common amateurs and well known entomologists such as Eugène Le Moult who was the author to many books.

Nowadays, original cabinets with their glass drawers still protect thousands of mounted insects brought from every continents. The collection are constantly renewed and resupplied by our correspondents and hunters all over the world. Common species to more unusual ones are collected within the rules and guidelines set by the Washington Convention. The collections vary with seasonal changes and shipments. However, most of the Coleoptera and Lepidoptera families can be found in our collections.

The insects are received in small bundles. They are then individually spread and pinned in our facilities with regards to the best techniques, and then sold individually in carrying boxes, or in traditional entomological display boxes. All the required equipment for insect hunters and collectors is available in our store : catching nets, spreading boards, pins, entomological display boxes, labels and much more. They can be found in the store and on the website.

Owning an extensive iconographic library, Deyrolle is developing its publishing activity in order to give access to the enchanting boards to the largest public. Deyrolle's famous images can be found on notebooks and notepads made of recycled paper but also on calendars, post cards, card decks and on other games.

For shops and bookstores, Deyrolle offers a selection of particularly aesthetic pedagogical boards, a series of notepads and notebooks using its private iconographic library as well as some small butterfly boxes.

New pedagogical boards

With “Deyrolle pour l'Avenir”, the store reconnects with its pedagogical board editing activities by offering news boards detailing present-day issues. Aesthetically and scientifically accurate, these new communication tools covering subjects such as nature preservation and sustainable development appeal to the general public as well as private companies and numerous institutions.

Historically, Deyrolle has influenced many generations of pupils with their presence on the classroom walls. Often they were put on the black board by teachers while giving a natural science lesson. First supplier of the French public schools since 1866, Deyrolle has supplied for over 100 years primary and secondary schools as well as universities worldwide with pedagogical material. Witness of an era where Natural Sciences were the backbone of education, these posters were summarized by Emile Deyrolle's motto : “a beautiful picture is much better than a long speech an image is worth a thousand words as long as the information is rigorously accurate”.

Today Deyrolle puts the boards back in the centre of the ecological debate. After having “Explained Earth to the people” it is now time to preserve it. The issues addressed are chosen to sensitise the public to several issues : Water's rarefaction, Protection of the Fauna and Flora biodiversity, global warming, Natural disasters, waste management or even the best habits to adopt for a healthy nutrition and how to become an eco-friendly citizens. The texts are written by different experts , among wich Yves Paccalet a natural scientist and philosopher who wrote and participated on many publications about ecology and spent 15 years with Captain Cousteau on la Calypso . The drawings are done by well known and talented illustrators. They had the difficult task of capturing and recreating the spirit of the original boards while modernizing them. What would Emile Deyrolle think about the new boards, he who wrote : “Education by the eyes is the less tiresome for the mind. However, this education can only bear its fruits if the described material is perfectly accurate” ? Surely he would have been seduced by these pedagogical tools.

All new boards are approved by the French Ministry of Environment, UNESCO (PNUD), ADEME and the MUSEUM OF NATURAL SCIENCE OF PARIS. Deyrolle is also a member of the Comité 21(this comity is an association providing guidelines for sustainable development) and of the Comité d'éducation à l'Environnement Francilien (Educational comity for the Parisian region's environment). A comity of experts collaborates on the production of each new board. These experts work hand in hand with our partners' specialist.

Vintage Pedagogical Boards

In 1866, Emile Deyrolle takes over the ownership of the company Deyrolle founded by his grandfather. Both were natural sciences aficionados. The grandson developed various items used as teaching material ; anatomical models, biological pieces, and the most important of all : the publishing of coloured wall board called “Deyrolle school museum”.

Oriented towards different levels from primary to secondary classes and even universities, these boards had the vocation to teach the famous French “leçon de choses” to the young ones (these lessons can be compared to a simplified natural science class). They were also used to teach botany, zoology, entomology, geography, human anatomy and also civics. By 1870, hundreds of boards on many different topics were published and the State became Deyrolle's most important client by providing every school with the boards. The catalogues' sales points were quite clear : “Education by the eyes is the less tiresome for the mind. However, this education can only bear its fruits if the described material is perfectly accurate”.

Since April the first 1888, Deyrolle can be found at the number 46 of the street du Bac and continues its publisher activities. It still offers every year new didactic boards. Deyrolle now has some boards translated in Spanish, Portuguese and Arabic. The entire collection of boards is depicted in a book called : “L'Ecole de la Nature, planches Deyrolle” by Yves Paccalet ( 10/08 Edition Hoebeke) Nowadays, a large part of this heritage still exist for the joy of Nature lovers as well as grown up pupils who happily rediscover their childhood boards and use them for their high ornamental value. The reprinting of some chosen boards is very welcomed and this reprinting program is only in its early stages.

Terms and conditions

Shipping and handling as well as insurance fees are to be covered by the clients. The rental price and the deposit are to be paid upon order or pick up by cash, check or credit card.
In case the piece is damaged beyond repair, it will automatically be charge at full price. If the piece is not returned in due time, an additional day will be charged each day.
If the piece is not returned within 2 weeks of the initially agreed returned date, the deposit will be lost with no further warning
